Big news! I’m excited to announce that we will be launching a crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter this Wednesday, March 25. But why are we doing so, you ask?
- New priorities
So this past few year has been a little crazy and in many ways life altering. I got married, switched my career focus to Materials + Process more or less full time, and 6 months ago I gave birth to my first child Mylo Ocean. (Insert all the warm fuzzy emojis here.) All of which has shifted my perspective and my priorities in very positive ways.
- Taking my small business to the next level
The funny thing is that many people think I already use an outside manufacturer for my products, but for the last 3 years I have been designing and crafting each and every item myself. Crafting each product by hand has been very fulfilling, but also very limiting. In order to grow, I need help in manufacturing some of our pieces. A But there are a lot of upfront costs to get it going – casting the steel patern dies used to cut the leather, purchasing the top quality leather itself, and meeting the minimum order quantities from the manufacturer all add up to more than a small business can handle. Crowdfunding feels like a great way to make it happen!
- Sharing is caring.
I’ve reached my capacity to make the products myself. Honestly it has come to a point where sometimes when I receive a large order I cringe at the amount of work I have in front of me. Which is a bad sign. I can ask for help but crafting leather is a skill that requires time and patience to grow. I am currently physically unable to take large orders. And as a new mom, I have even less time. While I will still be handcrafting a number of our items, producing our larger and more popular pieces with our manufacturer will allow me to share our products with more people.
- Being able to make new designs again. YES!
I see myself as a designer first. To be able to physically make my own designs is an added bonus. But because I get caught up in this circle of producing and selling to make my small business run, I’m not able to focus on new designs as often as I would like, which makes me very sad. Getting help on the manufacturing side will enable me to focus on creating new designs again, Yaay!
The whole process from deciding to manufacture to launching a crowdfunding campaign was pretty daunting. Its all a leap of faith. Many thanks to all those taking this leap with me – it’s going to be great fun!
